16CFR Federal Regulations

The United States is a federal state structure with a complex legal system. The technical regulations related to products in the United States are scattered within the federal legal and regulatory system, which includes both written laws enacted by Congress - the Act (ACT) - and regulations, requirements, and specifications formulated by various departments of the federal government. In addition, each state in the United States also has its own state regulations.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) is an independent federal regulatory agency established by the US Congress in 1972. The commission reduces the risk of injury and death related to consumer goods beyond reasonable limits through education, safety standard activities, regulation, and the implementation and enforcement of laws and regulations. CPSC is responsible for regulating thousands of consumer goods used by Americans in homes, schools, leisure, or other settings.
